    Description

1953, Chicago, Playboy began as a men's lifestye and entertainment publication. Identified as “a sexually revolutionizing” enterprise, the company sought to present a publication that would present the finest in men's lifestyle from fashion, food, drink to design and social intrigue. Hugh Hefner was one of a few founding entities of the enterprise, he became the mouthpiece and face of the label that was personified by the iconic “Playboy Bunny”, created by Art Director Art Paul. Playboy evolved and established itself with interests for the fashionable male, that would span decades. Beyond the general sexual nature of the label, the magazine became associated with, generally, men's entertainment as the publication matured. Eventually, it became distinguished as pornography despite other elements of the publication's exploits like politics and fashion. It was their “center-fold” aspect that gained them that allotment and title.
Although, Playboy beyond that of a publication and more of a business/media enterprise, distinguished itself in various other avenues like night clubs, television, USO involvement and... eyewear.
With the licensing gained in the late 1970s/early 1980s by the Austrian eyewear manufactory, Optyl created by Wilhelm Anger, Playboy released a slate of collections, adorned with the iconic “Playboy Bunny” and created in the fashion of Optyl's resin-based, molded thermoplastic that was the name-sake of the company and the bread and butter of Safilo. A material launched as 20% lighter than other petroleum-based, polymer materials, with no plasticizer and naturally hypoallergenic.
