Description

I made this knife at age 72.  My retirement hobby is Scrimshaw.  I bought a Damascus Steel Kukri Blade Blank from India.  A Kukri blade is like what the Gurkha's carry.  India is where Damascus Steel was made hundreds of years ago.  Indians made the steel billets and then these billets were trucked (by camel)  to Damascus, Syria.  Damascus craftsmen then forged the steel into knives and swords.  These are high carbon steel blades and can hold a sharp edge.
I have not sharpened this knife, but you can if you want to.  I had no need to sharpen because this was a display piece for me.  The good thing about high carbon steel is holding a sharp edge.   The other good thing is the amazing pattern on the blade that no two blades are ever the same.   I keep all my Damascus Steel blades well waxed with British Museum Grade clear wax.
I used an incisor from one of the most dangerous animals on earth for the handle.  Only the mosquito in more deadly to man.  The Guard is made from a one ounce silver bullion coin.  This is 1 oz of 99.99 pure silver coin worth about .
So then I cut the silver coin with a small slot to fit tightly over the tang.  Next I fitted the incisor to the tang using epoxy to secure it in place.  Both fit the tang solidly and snug.  The incisor has a strong enamel on the top and bottom which is hard and very strong.
Next was the Scrimshaw work, my passion.   I polished both sides of the incisor to a clean smooth finish.  I did a Narwhal picture on one side and Marlin picture on the other, both in color.  The knife is  about 7.5 inches long and the blade is about 4 inches.  I will last a thousand years if properly carried for.  I also wax the handle and it shines up well.
Over all, I spent over 80 hours on this knife.  The materials cost me over 0.  It's been on display in my home for 3 years and never used for any other purpose.   So why sell it??    Well, at age 74, maybe I got another ten years.  When I'm gone, the wife will give it to a Grand Kid, who will not understand the value and craftsmanship of this knife.  A buyer will, and the knife will last another 1000 years.
