FIRST EUROPEAN IN AUSTRALIA
It is thought that Portuguese navi-
gators first discovered Australia in the
early 15th Century, because it was in-
dicated on maps shown to King Henry
VIII in 1542. To support this there
is a legend of the Australian aborigines
(or natives) which relates a shipwreck
around that time on the Australian
coast in a great storm, from which
only one white man survived. He was
considered a god by the local native
tribes and worshipped as such until
he died of old age. There is, however,
no record of any descendants he may
have left.
